A lot of people have told me that self publishing might be the way I should go, because they have luck with it. While I have considered that in the past I can no longer afford to go that route. In fact a few years ago I got a call from a publishing company who told me they were interested in my book. While I won’t give out the name of the company I will say its called Vanity press (for those of you who know me at chat you’d know which company I’m talking about.) Let’s just say I had a bad experience with the person who called me, she was rude and unprofessional. I know several people around here that have had luck with this particular company however I will not get in the same trap again. I will be doing a lot of research and taking the advice from the many people on FM writers chat group who have been published. while some of the advice I may not always agree with I appreciate anything that my readers have to offer. I know one things for sure I am NOT going with self publishing, unless its a copy from staples for editing use. That ranges for about twenty dollars a copy, and they bind it for you. Its not like a paper back book as it opens flat but its a lot easier then risking losing pages. For now at least I will stick with the traditional route of going to a publisher via an agent or directly. Some say an agent helps a lot, some say they don’t. I believe I’ll know what to do when the time is right.
So as some of you know I have been hanging out with a group of writers in a chatroom at FM writers.com I’ve been at this particular chat group for over a year and I love it. We all have the same goal, to get published. While we won’t do it the same it’s still a goal. For me, well I haven’t exactly decided which way I’m going yet. There are so many options out there I don’t know which one I’m suposed to chose. I do know however that I won’t pay for anything I publish. Self publishing is one of my options, meaning you pay the company to send you x copies but you have to sell those yourself. I know many people who have done it this way. Epublishing might be an option to go, meaning selling stuff through your website. I’m not quite sure how to go about doing that so I think for now I’m going to go the traditional route and get a traditional publisher. Whether or not I get an agent that totally depends.
Why do I write? Well because honestly I don’t have anything else to do. What was once a challenge from a now former manager turned into a huge project which took me two and a half some odd years to complete. Now with the help of some classes I’ve been taking I am in the process of trying to find out how to go about publishing my writing so I can actually make something of myself. There isn’t exactly much work out there at the moment and after loosing my job the best advice anyone gave me was finish your novel. Well now the question is what am I going to do with it?
